Tomorrow Triumphant

THE PLOT AGAINST HUMANITY’S HEART
Coronel,
you who have
the arms and power:
you can order
the bombing
of our mountains
so that their calm
breasts
of bird-like hope
will flee,
frightened into the wind.

Coronel,
you who have
the arms and power,
you can order
the killing
of whomever you please:
the jailing
of the gallant and luminous
who dares
to hold their forehead high
with dignity.

Coronel,
you have
the arms and power
which you can send
to close an institution;
to wound the sweet future
of a country
with the savage grey bite
of your accursed bullets.
to uniform
the public pride
of the first and last quetzal.*

But it will all be in vain,
coronel,
because with your ancient impotence
you can’t order
the bombing,
killing, and jailing
to uniform
the non-conformity
of an entire people.
That’s the struggle,
coronel,
and in that struggle
you have
the worst part
because you, coronel,
conceive of humanity
as being retrograde
and the people feel
that humanity is advancing.
Well,
there it is,
coronel:
plot
against humanity’s heart
because you already lost
the battle against us
before it
began.
